All you need to know about "The Beagle"

The Beagle is a very popular dog breed among French families. There are several types. But generally speaking, their characteristics are very similar. Here is what you need to know for owners or those who wish to adopt one.

The history of the Beagle

The history of the Beagle began in England. It was born from a cross between hounds and the Harrier. Like its parent, the Beagle has great speed. The name Beagle comes from the Celtic word "beag" which translates as "small".
The Beagle arrived in France in the 1860's and was an immediate success. He was very popular as a hunting dog, but also as a companion dog.

Characteristics and behaviour of the Beagle

Its characteristics

Here are the characteristics of the size and appearance of the Beagle:

Being a medium-sized dog, it measures between 33 and 41 cm at the withers and weighs between 12 and 18 kg ;
Their coat is usually tricoloured: black, brown and white. It has a short coat that is very resistant to bad weather;
Its ears are large, drooping and require special care and attention. He also has very soft brown eyes;
He has a robust body and a very developed sense of smell, making him a fine sleuth.

Its behaviour

The Beagle is a very lively and cheerful dog. His character, neither shy nor aggressive, makes him an excellent playmate for children. Originally a pack hunter, the Beagle will be happier in the countryside and will appreciate the company of other dogs. They do not like to be alone. The Beagle also needs to expend its energy, whether on walks or in a large garden.

Maintenance

The Beagle is an easy-care dog in all respects: it does not shed much, does not drool much, and does not require a lot of money.
Regular brushing is all that is needed to care for the coat. This will make the coat more beautiful and cleaner on the surface. The Beagle does not need to be bathed often, but its nails should be trimmed regularly. This prevents the risk of cracking, which can cause pain.
His floppy ears should be treated once a month with an antiseptic. Finally, care should be taken to ensure that tartar is not deposited on the teeth.

Health

On average, the Beagle lives between 12 and 14 years. This breed has an iron constitution. However, it can contract certain diseases such as hip dysplasia, seizure disorders, allergies and herniated discs. It can also be subject to hypothyroidism (hormonal disorder), pulmonary stenosis (hereditary heart defect) and Beagle Pain Syndrome (rare chronic disease).

The most important thing to remember is that the Beagle is an excellent pet, but also a very good hunter. Furthermore, it is very easy to care for, both for its hygiene and its health.
