Origin and history of broccoli
Broccoli, with the scientific name Brassica Oleracea, belongs to the Brassicaceae family, i.e. the crucifers. They are edible plants classified as vegetables. Their shape is similar to cauliflower, except that they are entirely green.
Their history goes back to antiquity, when they were cultivated on the Mediterranean coast. They were eaten in the 1st century A.D. by the Romans, who knew how to cook them so well, either raw or in sauce. Broccoli was a very popular vegetable. However, their name comes from the word "brocco" which means "shoot". And when they were introduced to France by Catherine de Medici, she called them "Italian asparagus".
The benefits of broccoli
Broccoli is a very nutritious vegetable. It contains, among other things, vitamin C, vitamin K, potassium, calcium, beta-carotene and sulphur, not to mention antioxidants. And with over 90% water, they are low in calories. All this means that people who regularly eat vegetables such as broccoli have a much lower risk of diseases such as breast cancer, prostate cancer and stroke. They also play an important role in strengthening the immune system and protecting the eyes.
Consumption of broccoli
Broccoli is usually eaten during the cold season. It is then a seasonal product that is eaten from November to January, but is available as an early product in February, March and October.
However, broccoli can be eaten in many different ways, both raw and cooked. But the health benefits of broccoli depend on how it is prepared.
Studies show that raw broccoli provides the most nutritional benefits. However, if you don't like it, you can always opt for steaming. The important thing is not to cook them for a long time. Another option is to cut them finely and then let them rest for about 90 minutes before cooking them.
