Often used in the preparation of various dishes, the consumption of pumpkin can bring a number of benefits. Its seeds and flowers can even be eaten and can provide the nutritional intake that the body needs. Find out everything you need to know about pumpkin, followed by a must-try recipe.
Origin and history of the pumpkin
Often confused with the pumpkin, the pumpkin belongs to the same subspecies as the courgette. Its name comes from the Latin "citreum" which literally means lemon because of its colour. However, the pumpkin originated in North America, more precisely in Mexico. Its history in Europe began in the 16th century, when Christopher Columbus brought it back from an expedition to the Caribbean. Besides being known as the symbol of Halloween, it is also a fruit, but tends to be eaten as a vegetable.
Difference between pumpkin and pumpkin
The only thing pumpkins and pumpkins have in common is that they belong to the same family of cucurbits, except that their subspecies is different. However, the two differ in shape. While the pumpkin has a spherical shape with an orange colour, the pumpkin is rather flattened and has a colour ranging from reddish orange to dark green. Pumpkins have a much stringier flesh than pumpkins.
The benefits of pumpkin
Pumpkins have many more benefits than you might think. Indeed, its orange colour proves its richness in carotenoids. This allows it to produce vitamin A, but also to strengthen the immune system. It is also rich in potassium, which helps enormously in the fight against the risk of cardiovascular disease. The high fibre and iron content of pumpkin is also effective against constipation and kidney disease.
