The Aries Rabbit

The Aries Rabbit

Who could resist the charms of a ram rabbit? Beautiful, affectionate, intelligent, this soft-furred ball of fur is also easy to train. However, before taming one, let's get to know it better. History, appearance, maintenance, character, behavior, and health are detailed in the following sheet.

What are the origins of the ram rabbit?

History shows that the ram rabbit has two origins: one French and one English. The ram rabbit is recognisable by its large, floppy ears and is the result of various crosses. Some say that it comes from the wild rabbit, which is a wild rabbit. The size of its ears is ordinary in nature, but they have developed because of their living conditions. At that time, monks bred them for their meat and so they had to live in warm, narrow cages. British breeders were very fond of them and decided to exploit them in order to obtain rabbits with larger ears in the 19th century.

How to recognize a ram rabbit?

With its unique appearance, the ram rabbit is easily recognisable by its long, floppy ears. And with its extremely soft fur that gives it a friendly look. Categorised into five according to the French Federation of Rabbitry, their weight and size vary according to their breed. The same applies to the size of their ears, which range from 9 to 60 cm. All breeds taken together, they weigh between 1.8 kg and 6 kg as adults. Moreover, cuddly rabbits can be black, brown, light brown or dark blond or white.

How does a ram rabbit behave?

Generally speaking, it has a good character. It is a docile animal with an extreme intelligence. It is therefore easy to train and easily recognises its name and owner. Also known as a lope, it needs constant affection and attention. He is very loving, cuddly and does not like to be alone. For lack of a carrot, this ball of hair chews up anything that falls under its nose. As he is sociable, he can adapt very well to the presence of felines or canines. Despite all these good points, his behaviour can become aggressive as soon as he feels left out.

How to care for a ram rabbit?

The maintenance of this rabbit starts with a good diet of pellets, vegetables, fruit and hay. The cage should be clean and spacious, as he is very agile. Ideally, it should be allowed to run around the garden for hours at a time. Since it has no smell, it can groom itself. However, you should brush its hair once a day and three times during the moulting period. Don't forget to trim their nails regularly to prevent them from scratching themselves.

What about their health?

A ram rabbit lives between 8 and 10 years, a life expectancy that is the result of meticulous care and a healthy lifestyle. To achieve this, you need to spay or neuter your rabbit and take it to the vet for regular visits. Because of his fragile health, he is prone to microbes and viruses that are present in his environment. This is why he needs to be immunised with a vaccine. Unfortunately, the size of his head is a great disadvantage. This causes malocclusions and premature dental wear. As for the ears, they are not spared from otitis (internal and external) and frequent abscesses.
