The Australian Shepherd
The Australian Shepherd is a loving dog that does not lack character. These dogs are built for activity and work, and have all the physical and mental skills needed to accomplish a variety of tasks. Medium-sized, agile and intelligent, they fit perfectly into family life and adapt to a variety of living environments, provided they are not bored.
His Story:
Contrary to its name, the Australian Shepherd is not native to Australia, but to the United States. It was American farmers who developed the breed in 1900 in order to have a dog capable of raising livestock.
Although many theories are disputed, the true origin of the breed is Basque: the ancestors of the Australian Shepherd were dogs of Basque origin imported to North America and later to Australia.
Appearance:
The Australian Shepherd has a semi-long coat rather straight or even wavy and soft.
There are 4 different types of coat: black and red tricolour, red merle and blue merle with or without white spots or tan markings.
He has almond-shaped eyes, bitter, blue, brown or all the colours associated. It is taller than it is long, with a straight tail of less than 10cm.
Character and behaviour:
The Australian Shepherd is curious by nature. He is able to guard a herd because he is a dog of great intelligence. He is also very loyal, and can adapt to family life without any problem. However, it is not made for a life in apartment, it is a dog which needs big spaces.
Interview:
Concerning his food, you will have no problem to feed him because he is a greedy dog! It is also for this reason that it is essential to play with him so that he practices a regular physical activity.
Health :
Its life expectancy is about 12-15 years. It can be exposed to eye defects up to blindness, so it will be preferable to make an annual follow-up to avoid any eye problems.
Moreover, it is prone to hip and elbow dysplasia and epilepsy.
