Origin and history of the tomato
The history of the tomato begins with its discovery in Mexico, in South America. It was cultivated by the Aztecs and then imported to Europe in the 16th century by the Spanish and Portuguese. It is a herbaceous plant of the Solanaceae family, which has become an essential ingredient in many recipes.
From a nutritional point of view, the tomato is considered a vegetable. Indeed, its carbohydrate content is low enough to qualify as a fruit. However, from a botanical point of view, it is classified as a fruit, as it develops from a flower.
Nutritional benefits of tomatoes
The tomato is generally appreciated for its very low calorie content. As it is rich in water, it ensures good hydration for the body. Tomatoes can also provide a lot of vitamins, especially vitamin A and vitamin C. In addition, it is low in fat, protein and carbohydrates compared to other vegetables. However, it is important to note that tomatoes are high in fibre, which helps regulate transit.
Care of the tomato
The tomato is a rather delicate vegetable to grow, so it requires a minimum of maintenance. First of all, it must be exposed to the sun to ensure its development. Then, it must be watered regularly, at least until the fruit is coloured. However, when watering, be sure to do so at the base and never on the leaves.
Once harvested, the tomato should be stored at room temperature, especially between 20 and 22 °C. If they are stored in the refrigerator at a temperature below 7°C, they will not ripen. And if it is kept at a temperature above 15°C, it may quickly become soft. On the other hand, it should not be exposed to the sun during cultivation.
Recipe idea for tomatoes
Since the tomato is an excellent and important ingredient in a recipe, it is a very important ingredient in a recipe. Note that it is a seasonal product that is usually harvested between May and October. Here is an ideal recipe to enjoy with the family and with simple ingredients: tomato and mustard pie.
Ingredients
- 500 g of tomatoes
- 2 tablespoons of olive oil
- 3 tablespoons of mustard
- 150 g grated Emmental cheese
- 1 puff pastry
- Salt
- Pepper
Preparation
Start by preheating the oven to 200°C. Line your tart tin with the puff pastry and prick the base with a fork. Put it in the oven for 5 minutes. Once the pastry is pre-baked, cover the base with mustard. Place the tomato slices in several layers, making sure they look good. Add a few pinches of salt, then olive oil and finally the grated Emmental cheese. Bake for 20 minutes at the same temperature. Serve preferably with a green salad.
